A Home on the Field: How One Championship Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America, is the new book from investigative reporter Paul Cuadros. Cuadros set out to write a book about how immigration to the interior states of the midwest and southest United States was changing the face of America. His investigation took him to Siler City, North Carolina to look into how the food processing industry in central North Carolina was causing a mass of immigration to the small towns of the Piedmont and what impact it was having on the area.

Cuadros found, in Siler City, a town struggling to deal with the immigration whose frustration peaked in a now infamous Ku Klux Klan rally headed by David Duke. Among the backdrop of this tumultous situation, Cuadros found himself championing the creation of a soccer team at Jordan Matthews High School to serve as a focal point for the young hispanic boys of the region to have something to look forward to and entice them to stay in school, rather than dropping out and working in the local chicken plant. After years of struggle, Cuadros suceeded and within three short years, against tremendous odds, Cuadros coached JMHS to the State Championships, where they won the title against Lejeune HS at SAS Soccer Park here in Cary.

This may be a record for TriSoccerFan...3 straight posts about MLS with no regards to Triangle area soccer, but bear with me since there's a lot happening in MLS with the playoffs hitting full stride. Anyone who saw the Chivas USA v. Houston Dynamo match on Sunday has to be revved up for the run to the MLS Cup.

If you're looking to keep close tabs on the playoff scene, you might want to check out the new MLS Radio which will debut today, Tuesday, October 24th, at 2pm EDT on MLSNet. The 60-minute radio show, which will be hosted by FSC on-air personality and BBC reporter Sean Wheelock and Kansas City Wizards & US National Team player Jimmy Conrad, will air weekly until the week of MLS Cup, when it will take place daily from Tuesday November 7 to Sunday November 12 from Frisco, Texas, site of Pizza Hut Park and MLS Cup 2006. The show will feature guest appearances, incoming phone calls, instant messages and e-mails from fans, as well as expert opinions and commentary.

Proving once again that MLSNet "gets it" when it comes to embracing new media to talk to their fanbase (such as pioneering live webcasts of their matches), all shows will also be available on-demand as well as via podcasts.

I got an email from one of the guys who works in the FC Dallas front office who reads the TSF site from time to time (must be a Dax McCarty fan, I guess). Evan Mitz has offered to help any TriSoccerFan readers planning to make the trip to out to Frisco for MLS Cup 2006 arrange priority seating at Pizza Hut Park. Even better, if you buy directly through him in the FC Dallas ticket office, you can save quite a bit of money in avoided TIcketMaster fees.

So if, like me, you're planning a roadtrip to MLS Cup, give Evan a call at 214-587-6326 and drop me a line too so we can meet up before or after the match on Sunday, November 12th.

The No. 2 Duke Blue Devils (11-2-1, 4-1-1) will bring North Carolina (10-4-2, 2-3-1) to town on Friday night for an ACC showdown. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. under the lights of Koskinen Stadium. It is Senior Night for the Blue Devils, and seniors Kyle Helton, Chris Loftus, Danny Miller, Ryan Pascioni, Chase Perfect, and Scott Siegel will be honored before the game.

“I think it’s going to be one of those games that is absolutely thrilling to play in,” said captain Loftus after practice on Wednesday. “It’s going to be a battle, and we have a target on our back now, so we know they are going to come in here ready to take us down. We’re not going to let that happen.” UNC's Stephen Bickford also sized up the match with his take on the 2006 edition of the Blue Devils: "Duke is a great team that is deep with talent in every position. They are an extremely athletic team, and their size and pace is always a threat."

The News & Observer's Rachel Carter previews the Tobacco Road rivalry, in which Duke holds a slight edge with 39-35-9 record, in today's edition. For those not able to make it to Durham on Friday night, the match will be broadcast live and delayed on-demand on ACC Select.

Former Campbell Camel Sonny Guadarrama, who signed a pro contract over the summer with Santos (Mexico), was included in the United States Under-20 Men’s National Team roster for the Busan International Four Nations Tournament, Aug. 29-Sept. 2 in Busan, South Korea. The Cedar Park, Texas native with Mexican heritage, played in all 3 matches and started two, including the USA’s 3-1 victory over Argentina at Busan Asiad Main Stadium, a 2002 World Cup venue.

This week, Sonny was called up by the Mexican U-20 team for two matches vs. Ecuador on Oct. 19 and 21. In 2005, Guadarrama rated second among the nation’s freshmen and ranked 16th nationally in points per game (1.68). He finished 18th in goals per game (0.68) among all Division I players. He was a unanimous choice as Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year and also gained second-team Freshman All-America recognition from College Soccer News after tallying 32 points on 13 goals and six assists in 19 matches.

Based on some nuances of recent FIFA rulings, it appears that Guadarrama will have his choice of whether to represent El Tri or the Yanks as he reaches the senior national team level.

It's been a rough two weeks for the Tar Heels. After drawing 1-1 with the defending national champion Maryland Terrapins in a hard fought affair, UNC fell to Campbell away in a game where the only goal was an own goal. The Tar Heels scoreless streak continued back at Fetzer Field on Friday the 13th as Wake Forest got the better of the Tar Heels by a single goal. Winless now in 4 straight games, the Tar Heels look to rebound on Friday when they travel up Hwy 15/501 to take on ACC-leading Duke.

The RailHawks Underground continues on hiatus until there's more RailHawks news to talk about on a weekly basis. I was all ready to do a new episode this week to interview our new coach Scott Schweitzer, but before I could get back in town from a business trip, Kick This up in Rochester did a wonderful interview with both Schweitzer and Chris Economides.

Since there is little more that I could add to the interview that the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle's Jeff Diveronica and Kick This News Director James Weise didn't already cover, I thought I'd just point you in the direction of this week's episode of Kick This.

With the 4-1 victory over NC State on Sunday, Duke's John Rennie became the winningest coach in ACC history. In his 28 year career at Duke, Rennie has amassed 392 victories, which includes 90 ACC victories. Although Rennie now holds the total win record for ACC coaches, he is still tied with former Clemson coach I.M. Ibrahim for most ACC wins. The Blue Devils can give their gaffer sole possession of that honorary when UNC comes calling on Friday night or in their final ACC test of the year, away to Clemson on October 27th.

“I haven’t even thought about it,” Rennie said after the game about his record-breaking. “I’ve had a lot of great players and a lot of great assistant coaches. And I’ve been here a long time, so that adds up to a lot of wins.” Rennie's 3 decade career at Duke has seen the Blue Devils take the National Championship in 1986, win four ACC titles, and make five appearances in the College Cup (1982, 1986, 1992, 1995, 2004).

Duke took the second of the three "Triangle Derbies" on the men's side of ACC action this afternoon when they beat NC State 1-4 at Method Road. With the victory, Duke moved into sole possession of the first place spot in the ACC with a 4-1-1 record with two games to play. UNC, who fell at home on Friday night to Wake Forest, hope to put a damper on the Blue Devils ACC regular season title plans when the two teams square off next Friday night in Durham.

In other matches around the Triangle this weekend, the Campbell men draw 1-1 with Gardner-Webb while the women Camels beat ETSU 1-0. The Duke women battled to a scoreless draw with Maryland, the Wolfpack women conceded 3 goals without reply at Boston College, and Yael Averbuch's free kick was all the Tar Heels women needed to get past Virginia Tech on Sunday.

As we reported back in May, Dmitry Piterman, President of Spanish League club Deportivo Alaves has officially acquired a USL First Division franchise beginning in the 2007 season. Now more details are starting to emerge about their entry into USL-1 next year along with the RailHawks.

The club will be named the California Victory, deriving its nickname from Alaves’ home city of Vitoria, the capital city of the province of Alava in the Basque country of Spain. The club will play out of Kezar Stadium located in the southeastern corner of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. It is the former home of the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers of the NFL, and the San Francisco Dragons of the Major League Lacrosse. It has a current capacity of 10,000 seats.

But while the USL-1 gains another team in the Victory, it loses one in the Toronto Lynx. It had been unclear what the future held for the Toronto USL-1 franchise as the MLS expansion Toronto FC prepares to begin play in 2007.

After much speculation, Bruno Hartrell, the chief financial officer and part-owner of the Lynx has announced his intention to move the Lynx into the Premier Development League. The Lynx, together with the Toronto Lady Lynx, intend to continue play at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto’s west end. The Lynx will be the fourth Canadian PDL side, joining the Ottawa Fury, the Thunder Bay Chill and the Abbotsford Rangers. The alignment of the league will be announced at a later date.

Scott Schweitzer, Head Coach of the Carolina RailHawks

As we at TSF speculated back in March, former Rochester Rhinos defender and captain Scott Schweitzer has been tapped to be the first head coach of Carolina RailHawks F.C. Schweitzer, a current Triangle area resident and 2006 assistant coach of the Raleigh Elite PDL squad, is a former NC State alum and a veteran professional player with a 12 year career in both the NPSL indoor league and the USL outdoor leagues.

Schweitzer spent the bulk of his professional career (1998-2003, 2005) with the Rochester Rhinos where he was a fan favorite. "During his time with the Rhinos, Scott was a leader, a warrior, an entertainer, and a winner. I always wondered what he’d be like as a head coach. And given how well Nick DeSantis has done in Montreal, I expect that Schweitzer can get the job done." said James Weise, News Director of Kick This in Rochester.

"The RailHawks are excited to have someone of Scott's caliber as our head coach," said Chris Economides, president and general manager of the Carolina RailHawks. "During my years in Rochester, I saw first-hand that Scott is a leader on the soccer field as a player. I have no doubt that he will be just as successful on the sidelines as a head coach."

Playing in front of its largest home crowd (1481) in the last 17 years, Campbell ran its home record to a perfect 6-0-0 as the Campbell Camels upset the #3 ranked Tar Heels from Chapel Hill. A 75th minute own goal deflected into the Tar Heels net by UNC's Michael Callahan as he defended Jairo Zambrana's corner kick was all the scoring Campbell would need as freshman Bryce Kenny kept a clean sheet in his first career start. The win matches the biggest upset for Campbell since the Camels joined Division I soccer in 1977. Coincidentally, the win over the third ranked Tar Heels matched a simlar upset of the Tar Heels who were also ranked third in the country when they were upset in Buies Creek in 1988.

On a big night of ACC soccer in the Triangle, Duke upset Virginia 2-1 on the strength of goals from Jepson and Germanese while UNC drew 1-1 with Maryland courtesy of a Ben Hunter goal. All four sides were ranked inside the Top 10 in the various collegiate soccer polls ahead of the matches on Friday night.

In Durham, junior Duke defender Tim Jepson scored his first goal of the season on a miscommunication by the Virginia defense. With a restart from thirty-five yards out, senior defender Kyle Helton passed the ball over to Jepson, who struck what appeared to be a pass to Loftus. Goalkeeper Ryan Burke was following Loftus across the net, and thinking Loftus had beaten him to the ball, let it bounce past both players and into the goal. Then, with the game knotted 1-1 in the 57th minute, junior midfielder Michael Videira took a pass from senior forward Chris Loftus and tapped the ball over to Germanese, who hit a left-footed line drive from about twenty yards out in the back right corner of the net.

At the other end of Tobacco Road, the Tar Heels looked likely to avenge last year's 4-1 loss to the Terrapins when Ben Hunter struck inside 7 minutes, but Maryland roared back after halftime to equalize when the Tar Heels failed twice to clear a corner half-way through the second stanza. Although it looked like the Tar Heels would rebound from the goal when Dworsky was fouled inside the penalty area just two minutes later, Chris Seitz saved Ted Odgers' penalty to leave the game in the balance. The Tar Heels final best chance to take 3 points from the match came in extra time when Stephen Bickford went down under a challenge in the area halfway through the first overtime period but referee Chico Grajeda denied the Tar Heels plea for a late penalty.

Video highlights of the UNC v. Maryland match which was shown on Fox Soccer Channel are available below:

Carolina Railhawks FC

The Carolina RailHawks will announce the name of the coach who will lead the team through their inaugural 2007 season at a press conference at SAS Soccer Park on Wednesday, October 11th. Over the course of the summer, various rumors have linked John Harkes (NY Red Bull), Bob Gansler (formerly KC Wizards), and Peter Pinizzotto (Montreal Impact) with the gaffer's job, but it is expected that NC State alum and former Rochester Rhinos defender and captain Scott Schweitzer will be tapped to lead the RailHawks next season. Schweitzer retired from play before the beginning of the 2006 and served as an assistant coach for the Raleigh Elite PDL team this past year. Scott currently resides in the Triangle area.

The Tar Heels travelled to Blacksburg on Friday where they eeked out a 2-1 ACC road victory at altitude against Virginia Tech. UNC responded to an early Hokies goal when Bill Dworsky volleyed in a Ben Hunter free kick in the 23rd minute. The Tar Heels found the winner with 16 minutes to play when Ted Odgers converted from the spot after a penalty drawn by Michael Callahan. As thrilled as the Tar Heels were with a road ACC victory, they were brought back down to earth on Tuesday as they only managed a 3-3 draw against High Point University. After conceding an early goal, Michael Callahan and Zach Loyd gave the Tar Heels a temporary lead, but were forced to rely on a late equalizer from Eddie Ababio after High Point struck for two goals within a minute just past the hour mark. Although the Tar Heels managed 29 shots on goal through 110 minutes, they couldn't overcome the 3 goals allowed.

In today's Daily Tar Heel, Kristin Pratt urges the powers that be in college soccer to figure out a way to not have matches end in a tie. Using the disappointing draw between UNC and High Point this past Tuesday as a springboard for debate, Kristin espouses a couple of reasons why she feels tie games are bad for sport:

And while High Point was far from ranked, the draw that resulted kept the team from accomplishing the one thing it came to do - and at the same time, kept UNC from denying them. So, thanks to the tie, the only upset the fan is left with is that feeling in their stomach, wishing they had a winner. That's what's so irritating about a tie. It defies the purpose of sport.

The whole point of competition is to find out who is better, more talented or more capable at a certain set of skills. Winning is so critical to the athlete and the sports fan because it is recordable proof of having attained that higher quality of play. For a player or a fan, a lost game or match shows the distance a team or player needs to go to best another.

A tie just feels null to me because it doesn't reflect or fully quantify the competition that was in effect. Writers or fans will wax poetic about the joys of a win, and the anguish in a loss. I find it's pretty hard to express anything but disappointment in a tie, when a winner could have been determined some how.

It's an interesting debate and one that comes up often in soccer and other sports that allow draws. I tend to fall on the other side of the debate that says some days, neither team has shown that they are truly the dominant team and a draw is a fair and just result.

I'm sure High Point was hugely disappointed to go home without the win they came so close to pulling off. But imagine their disappointment if they had taken the Tar Heels to the brink only to lose the match on the crap shoot that is penalty kicks. What would that prove? That in an individual skills competition, one goalie got luckier than the other or one player choked when stroking his penalty shot for the top corner? It would say nothing of the valiant effort that High Point put in for 110 minutes.

This topic has come up recently at the international level as well, with FIFA Presient Sepp Blatter suggesting full-match replays or a continuous extra time period with reduced players per side until a goal is score rather than the current penalties approach to breaking ties in a match where a winner is required.

So what do you think? Do draws have a place in soccer (or sports in general)? In matches that do require a winner (like playoff matches or an elimination tournament), what is the fairest way to break a tie in soccer?

Use the comments section to let us know what you think.

United Soccer Leagues announced today the final selections for the Super Y-League’s ODP National Camps to be held at the Cocoa Expo Center in Cocoa, Florida in January and February of 2007. “The National ODP Camps have been a significant resource to U.S. National Team Staff Coaches, and provide opportunities for elite players to be identified by some of the top college and university programs in the country,” said USL ODP Coordinator, Vicente Bastidas.

Our two local Super-Y League clubs, CASL Elite and Triangle FC are well represented with close to 70 young men and women from the Triangle being selected or named alternates in the Super-Y ODP program. U.S. National Team Staff will be in attendance at this year's Super Y-League ODP National Camps beginning in January of 2007 in Cocoa, Florida, for further identification of players.

With ACC soccer season approaching the midway point, the eventual title winner is as much anybody's guess as it was at the start of the season. A single win separates the top 6 teams on the men's side after 4 games have been played, with no team keeping a perfect mark in the conference. Perhaps the picture will become a little clearer this coming weekend as the Triangle hosts two key matchups as Maryland visits UNC on Friday night at the same time Virginia squares off against Duke in Durham.

The men's standings through this weekend are:

School Conference Overall
W L T Pts. W L T
Maryland 3 1 0 9 10 1 0
Virginia 3 1 0 9 10 1 0
Clemson 2 1 1 7 8 1 1

NC State 1 3 1 4 3 6 1
Wake Forest 1 2 0 3 9 2 0
Virginia Tech 0 3 1 1 5 4 1

On the women's side, UNC has gotten off to a perfect 4-0 conference start but Wake Forest and Duke remain within three points of the lead. The current women's ACC standings are:

School Conference Overall

North Carolina 4 0 0 12 12 1 0
Wake Forest 3 1 0 9 11 2 0
