When RailHawks' fans first heard the news that the Town of Cary was bringing the Olympic qualifying Rugby 7s tournament to Cary, our thoughts turned to the RailHawks Open Cup schedule and our July 4th Fall Season opener which could be displaced from the main stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park due to the annual turf replacement.
Even though the atmosphere was great on Field 2 last year for the RailHawks epic extra time win over the L.A. Galaxy, the idea that several of the RailHawks' potentially largest attended matches (US Open Cup matches against MLS sides and a July 4th Fireworks match) could be restricted in attendance as a result of the rugby event had RailHawks fans on edge.
But it appears the Town of Cary has reached a decision not to re-sod the main stadium after the rugby tournament which means any potential US Open Cup matches the RailHawks plan in June, as well as the Fall Season opener on July 4th can still be played in the main stadium.
With both Rugby 7s and potential US Open Cup matches on the slate for June. It looks like area sports fans will have plenty of reasons to visit the yet unnamed stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park this summer.
